For the 8-speed automatic transmission, ZF set out to design and develop an entirely new gear set concept. The result is a revolution in transmission design: a transmission concept with 4 gearsets which requires only 5 shift elements – of which only two are open in any given gear. The 8HP also requires no more than 3 multi-disk clutches and 2 brakes, which allows it to achieve a greater degree of efficiency than other concepts. As a result of the fact that only 2 shift elements are open per gear, drag losses in the transmission are sustainably reduced. This effect is supported by the use of a new parallel-axis vane-type oil pump. 4 A torque range from 300 to 1000 newton meter makes the 8HP the perfect partner for all rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive designs. From the lower midsize segment to sporty luxury cars, and in every type of SUV and offroad vehicle – its revolutionary design is always an efficient and economical solution. Although the 8HP features 2 more speeds than the extremely successful 6HP, the dimensions have remained unchanged and the weight was even reduced by 3% to 87 kg (transmission modular system 8HP70) including oil. At the same time, the total transmission ratio spread of 7.0 ensures that the engine is always in its optimum operating range. This translates into improved acceleration and reduced fuel consumption.

Based on a really successful product, it combines dynamics and comfort with improved efficiency – also with regard to the costs. And it is ideally equipped for even stricter fuel consumption and CO2 emission regulations. In the premium and mid-size car range, the optimized 8HP product family enables the average fuel consumption to be cut by another 3%. CO2 emissions decrease to the same extent. These potentials can also be completely transferred to hybrid drives. Incidentally, additional savings potential by a further optimized startstop function is not yet included here. To achieve these innovations, ZF engineers have optimized some details. Thus, the reduction of drag torques and engine speeds further reduced the already very low power losses. Essential success aspects are the higher transmission ratio spread and the reduction of system pressures in many areas. Another factor is the multidisk separation of the brakes. Furthermore, advanced torsional vibration dampers enable a faster bypassing of the hydrodynamic power transmission and therefore further reduction in speed. Thus, the new 8HP is perfectly prepared for use with the new engines (3-8 cylinders) which will determine the trend of the years-to-come.

We've all known that the JL Wrangler would be coming with a ZF-Based 850RE 8-Speed Automatic Transmission for some time now and while I'd be the first to say that I'm excited about it, I must say that the thought of it not having a dipstick does raise an eyebrow. The v6 transmissions, 845RE/850RE, are made in Indiana by FCA. They’re slightly different internally from the ZF 8HP45/8HP50, but takes the same fluid and stuff. As for durability, not that many issues I’ve seen in various Mopar groups online.

2018 will bring the next version of the Jeep Wrangler. Not much is generally known at this point but we have picked up some details and have been compiling them in this article.

According to a report from The Toledo Blade, the 2018 Jeep Wrangler is rumored to debut at the L.A. Auto Show. FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne confirmed that the production of the 2018 Wrangler is set to begin in Toledo in November. The L.A. Auto Show takes place during the same month, where Marchionne also suggested that the 2018 Jeep Wrangler could make its official debut.

Needless to say it will be a long summer, stay busy with a Jeep project or some off roading.

JLWranglerForums renderings represent a composite from months of insider source tips, leaks, research and spy photo revelations and analysis. They were modeled from their real life prototypes photos. The major highlights include:

  • Fixed roof structure with large removable roof panels and removable back windows (from insider sources and previewed in early concept proposal)
  • Multi-configuration roof as seen in early concept model: full-width panels removed, center piece removed, and all panels installed

Spy photos everywhere – none without the masking

The new JL Wrangler will now be a 2018 model instead of a 2017. Dealers are indicating that 2017 ordering info is available and the JK remains another year.

Some spy photos were captured of what looks like a current JK but the real story is underneath. Several suspension changes were captured. The image below was featured on Car & Driver..see the full article 2017 Jeep Wrangler Spy Photos.

You can see the shocks are located outside the frame rail and the rear track bar seems to be located higher.

September 2015

Allpar reports some details about the roof. A source claims that the traditional soft top will not be. The Jeep will have removable soft panels over a substructure. The substructure will replace the sport bar – can only imagine what this may look like. This is possibly a result of reducing vehicle weight by providing more rigidity to the top of the vehicle and reducing the need for extra rigidity needed for convertibles.

The tail light design will be different, most likely using the x design seen on the new Renegade.

Bumpers and the 5×5 bolt pattern seem safe.

The Jeep will feature the 8 speed automatic Chrysler (850RE) transmission.
